Michigan State Football QB Aiden Chiles, 6 over Oregon, 31-10
Introduction: Michigan State
Evgeniy, Erts – the scenario is very familiar to me.
Michigan State’s football offense moved the ball against a top-10 opponent, turned it over in the red zone to stop its drive, then stalled as the offensive line and running game came up short.
The Spartans’ defense made big stops near the goal line, including two interceptions in the end zone, but gradually faded as Oregon’s offense piled up punt after punt on the ground.
Ultimately, the Ducks are too deep, too talented, too tough and too good to rebuild MSU. And the gap grew second by second.
NOT. 6 Oregon put together a masterclass of offense and defense to hand the Spartans their third straight loss, 31-10, Friday night at Odsen Stadium.
Spartans on the mend:
Spartans bring back WR Nick Marsh, more good news
Quarterback Aidan Childs struggled on his first drive and was under constant pressure all night as the running game collapsed around him, going 10 of 17 for 154 yards and four sacks. MSU won 477-250.
Meanwhile, the Ducks went hard on both lines, holding the Spartans to 59 yards on the ground while finishing with 213 rushing yards. Running back Jordan James passed for 166 yards and a touchdown on 24 attempts,
and quarterback Dillon Gabriel passed for 257 yards and 20 touchdowns on 32 carries for Oregon, adding a score.
The Spartans (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) enter the contest after losing to No. 3 Ohio State and the Ducks (5-0, 2-0) in consecutive games six days apart. They have 15 days to rest, recover and find an answer before playing Iowa on Oct. 19.
The Spartans couldn’t get anything going offensively after
halftime as Oregon held the ball for long stretches. The Ducks got a 50-yard field goal from Andrew Boyle and a four-and-goal with 11:19 left in the third quarter. This TD drive lasted 8 minutes and 7 seconds and also included a fourth-down conversion.
Chiles pushed MSU to avoid a shutout, setting up a seven-play, 75-yard scoring drive that sparked a Lynch Adams touchdown. But at this point it only obscured
the extent of the Spartans’ defeat. This could be the final push for Cheeley as senior backup Tommy Schuster takes his place and gives the young quarterback something positive before his upcoming extended break.
