Lawrence excelled on his birthday, leading the Jacks to their first win over the Colts, 37-34.
Introduction: Lawrence excelled
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jaguars can’t win anymore, they can’t be vulnerable now.
Trevor Lawrence threw for 371 yards and two
touchdowns on his 25th birthday, and
Jacksonville beat Indianapolis 37-34 on a 49-yard
field goal by Cam Little with 17 seconds left. Colt on Sunday.
Tank Bigsby ran for 101 yards and two scores for Jacksonville (1-4), which won for the first time since December and extended its home victory over regional rival Indianapolis (2-3) to double figures.
“We kind of know we’re not going to beat them, so it’s like, ‘Good timing, good timing,’” Jags defensive end Josh Hines-Allen said.
On the day the team inducted retired coach Tom Coughlin
Into the Hall of Fame, Jacksonville snapped a 10-game home run streak in its original uniform. It was a tribute to the man who turned an expansion team into a championship contender.
But another fall late in the game left the Jaguars searching for more answers. The Colts scored 24 points in the fourth quarter despite playing without quarterbacks Anthony Richardson, Jonathan Taylor and center Ryan Kelly. They gained 447 yards and converted 7 of 14 third downs, giving new defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen another headache.
Joe Flacco, a 39-year-old veteran who beat Jacksonville in Cleveland last season, completed 33 of 44 passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns. He led by 42 seconds and 45 seconds, and the Colts trailed by 14 points late in the game.
Flacco had one last chance, but Travon Walker ended the game with his third sack.
“Obviously it’s one of those games where you want to have the ball at the end,” Flacco said. “It’s the NFL. You’re going to play games like this, so you have to be able to dig deep and try to find a way to win.”
The Colts haven’t won in Jacksonville since 2014, and this losing streak is clearly getting the team’s attention.
I don’t have a good answer for you.
“I don’t have a good answer for you. “I’ve been here two years,” coach Shane Steichen said. “I know it has affected some people in the dressing room, but we definitely have to deal with it in the future.”
Lawrence finished his hiatus with nine games as a starter. He completed 28 of 34 passes, but threw his first interception of the season. In the second quarter, he had an 85-yard touchdown pass to rookie Brian Thomas and a 61-yarder to Christian Kirk for another touchdown pass.
Thomas finished the game with five receptions for 122 yards.
Lawrence, Thomas and Bixby became the catalyst for a team that was on the brink of collapse. Lawrence and Gabe Davis got into a scuffle in the first quarter and had to be picked off. That followed a midweek report that coach Doug Pederson had lost his locker room.
Pederson and his players denied any disagreements and certainly pointed to the win over Indy as a possible turning point.
“There were some disappointments. We talked a bit and cleared everything up. That’s all. I love it when that happens. You are facing problems. …let’s discuss this and move on. We did it better.”
Coughlin gets a turquoise jacket
The first coach in Jaguars history to be fired twice hit the Jaguars with pride at halftime. Colin was wearing a turquoise jacket when his name was announced on the pitch.
