How Argentina’s Julian Alvarez could ‘complete’ football at Paris 2024
Introduction : How Argentina’s
Julián Alvarez is only 24 years old and is on the verge
of essentially ‘retiring’ from football.
The Argentine has a great opportunity to do so in the coming weeks
as he bids for Olympic gold in Paris 2024 to add to his collection.
Two years ago, he was part of the Argentina
team that won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
It took him months to complete the treble in his
first season at Manchester City, which included the Premier League,
FA Cup and UEFA Champions League.
He became the first player in history to become a world champion
and a triple national champion in the same season.
and as a Copa America and Finalissima winner,
Alvarez has a few more conquests to go before he can claim to have won it all in football.
European Championship winner Spain will enter the knockout stage in Paris 2024.

Olympic football: Argentina at Paris 2024
Argentina knows exactly what it takes to win gold at the Olympics.
They’ve done it twice before, in Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008,
so it’s not new territory for them. Even better, Javier Mascherano,
the man who led them to glory, is a two-time gold medalist
alongside perhaps the greatest of all time, Lionel Messi.
However, their campaign for Paris 2024 didn’t get off to
the best of starts, and the run-up to the opening ceremony
saw perhaps one of the most controversial moments of the Olympics.
Mascherano’s team lost 2-1 to Morocco in the most dramatic fashion.
At the end of injury time (106 minutes at this point) the equalizer
was achieved and there was a feeling of relief among the fans and players.
The game almost ended 2-2, so we got a point. The crowd in
the stadium caused the referee to stop the game
and the players were sent back into the tunnel.
Nearly two hours later, players returned to the pitch to play
Morocco maintained
the remaining three minutes after Argentina’s equalizer
was ruled invalid for offside. Morocco maintained its lead and
recorded a surprise win in the opening game.
The defeat on the first day meant they went into the game
against Iraq knowing that a win was virtually essential to reach the final.
A comfortable 3-1 win secured their place in the next round
and it was Alvarez who shone brightly,
with two assists to lead his team to a decisive victory.
Overall, the Argentinians will set a record here if they
beat every country that stands in their way.
Yes, there are always trophies in domestic football and
nothing will be a treble – and when it comes to international football,
he crosses all the big honors off his list.
Except for Olympic gold. For all its significance,
standing here on top of the podium is probably one of the best wins of his career.
A win over Ukraine on Tuesday (July 30) gives Alvarez the
opportunity to “complete” international football with the final
medal on his bucket list, starting with the knockout stages.
