Why do we celebrate Republic Day?

India has been a self-governing country since August 15, 1947. India got independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, which we celebrate as Independence Day. However, since 1950 we celebrate 26 January as Republic Day. The Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950, so every year we celebrate this day as Republic Day. In 2016, we are celebrating the 75th Republic Day of India.

The names of great leaders and freedom fighters of India are Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Lala Lajpat Rai, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Lal Bahadur Shastri etc. He kept fighting against British rule to make India an independent country. We should never forget his sacrifice for our country. On such a wonderful occasion we should remember and honor him. Thanks to them, now we can think for ourselves and live in this country without coming under anyone’s pressure.

Our national flag has three colors and a circle in the middle with 24 sticks of equal size. All three colors of our Indian national flag have a specific meaning. The saffron color of our flag symbolizes the strength and courage of our country. The white color in the middle represents peace and the green color at the bottom represents growth and prosperity. At the center is a dark blue wheel with 24 equal spokes, representing the Dharma Chakra of the great king Ashoka.

Large exhibitions on Indian culture and traditions are also organized by Indian states to showcase India’s unity in diversity.
