David Montgomery had five runs in the final out to help the Lions win — his first complete Sunday in an NFL game — and had just one chance in overtime.
The Detroit Lions got their season off to a great start with a 26-20 win over the Los Angeles Rams.
In overtime, Detroit got the ball first and didn’t let Los Angeles attack. Two performances provided the song for the trip. The caliph Raymond was the first to land his first sweeper. David Montgomery then stole the ball 21 yards into Rams territory.
Then Jared Goff threw a 10-yard pass to Jahmil Gibbs. At this point, the Lions can smell the end zone.
Montgomery had a few more runs and finally found the end zone for the score. He finished with 91 rushing yards. Gibbs added 40 yards on the ground and scored a touchdown.
Goff was 18 of 28 for 217 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception.
The Lions had a relatively large lead at the start of the third quarter. Goff threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Jameson Williams with 10:29 left in the quarter to give Detroit a 17-3 lead.
Then the Rams had to dig deep and get back into the game.
Stafford led the Rams on an 11-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a Kyron Williams touchdown to cut the deficit to seven points. Rams kicker Joshua Cardy added a 26-yard field goal, then found Stafford Cooper for the game-winning 9-yard touchdown.
On the Lions’ final drive, Goff brought Detroit back and Jake Bates made a 32-yarder to tie the game. After extra time, the score was 20-20.
Williams finished the game with five catches for 121 yards.
Stafford had a fantastic game against the Rams. He played more in Los Angeles in the second half than in the first. He finished the game with 317 passing yards, one touchdown pass and one interception.
The Rams offense suffered early in the game when Puga Nagua left the game with a knee injury. He did not return.
