Simone Biles says she knew people would go crazy over her goat necklace
Introduction: Simone Biles says
Janet Heller, founder and
CEO of Janet Heller Fine Jewelry,
which made the necklace,
said others have asked her to recreate it,
but she has been rejected.
Simone Biles has long been nicknamed
“The Goat”
or “The Greatest of All Time,
” and now she has the accessories to live up to that acronym.
This week, the most decorated American gymnast
in Olympic history unveiled a new
necklace to accompany her gold medal,
much to the admiration of fans online.
The white gold necklace she proudly
wore to the podium on Thursday was
a diamond-encrusted goat. It was custom-made for the
Olympic athlete by Janet Heller,
founder and CEO of Janet Heller Fine
Jewelry in Calabasas, California.
“He called us about five weeks ago and said he
wanted to make a goat necklace,” Heller told NBC News.
Biles didn’t give Heller too many details,
he said, so the jeweler went through “several iterations”
before arriving at the final design.
“He didn’t know we were going to do it,
and it was a big surprise to him that we did it in 3D,” Heller said.
This necklace contains 546 diamonds.
Biles said she knew the necklace
My goat necklace
would attract attention.
“My goat necklace is kind of an ode because people
love it and some people hate it,”
he told reporters at a press conference.
“So it’s the best of both worlds. I said, “If all goes well,
we will wear goat necklaces.
I know people are going to go crazy for it.” In an interview
with the BBC, he said that even his “haters”
encouraged him to look into the design.
“And the haters hate it, so I love it even more,
and it’s a special part of me that’s there like
the stuffed goat in the village to remind me,
‘You can come out. You can do it.’ “You already did, so let’s go.”
The accessories aren’t the first jewelry Biles
has purchased from Hellers. Hellers also made
gold necklaces and diamond
Olympic rings for gymnastics champions.
It’s also not the first time Biles has paid homage
to the nickname. In 2021,
she wore a leotard that had a bedazzled goat on it.
“We wore the goat just to kind of,
I wouldn’t say piss people off, but mess with them
because there were a lot of people that say,
‘Hey Simone, you’re the goat,’ but then if I acknowledge it,
then I’m cocky,” Biles said in July 2021,
during an episode of the Facebook Watch series “Simone vs. Herself.”
Heller described working with Biles as an
“honor” and “privilege.”
“I found her to be so humble, down-to-earth and appreciative
” she said. “It really was the cherry on the top.
She was amazing to work with.”
While some people have reached out to
the jeweler asking her to recreate the goat
necklace for them, Heller said she’s refused.
“It’s very special, very one-of-a-kind,” she said.
Biles has three events left in Paris,
including a vault event on Saturday and balance
beam and floor finals on Monday.
