Introduction: Israeli Paralympic
The world’s best wheelchair athletes,
including the four Israelis Adam Berdichevsky,
Guy Sassoon, Sergey Lissev and Mayan Zikri,
are fighting tough competition in Roland Garros.
There will be no wheelchair tennis or quads
for men or women at this year’s US Open, and
for good reason. The world’s best wheelchair
tennis players are currently competing in Paris,
France to represent their country
at the Paralympic Games.
Every four years the Paralympic wheelchair
competition competes with the US Open.
(However, the junior wheelchair games will
be played as scheduled at the US Open at
the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Queens, New York.)
Four Israelis – Adam Berdychevsky, Guy
Sassoon, Sergey Lissov and Mayan Zikri – will
take part in the wheelchair tournament, which
begins on Friday and runs until September 7 at
the same court in Roland Garros, France. At the
Open, Sassoon recently won a quadruple
French Open title. The Israelis are off to a great start.
On Friday, the 40-year-old Perdichevsky, who lost his leg in a boat accident in 2007, defeated the Italian Luca Arca 6:2, 7:5. It was Berdychevsky’s first individual victory at the Paralympics since his debut in Tokyo 2020.
“I can’t tell you how happy I am to represent my country. Victoria, it was the first time I played in front of such an audience, it felt like I was playing at home – it was really special. I had a lot of fun showing people how to feel good on bad days.
Earlier this week, Berdichevsky served as the flag bearer of the Israeli delegation. “It was great to wave the flag, it was great to run with the whole Israeli team and everyone saw me on TV,” he reported.
In the second round he will face Alexander Cataldo from Chile.
Sergey Lisov
On Friday, 20-year-old Sergey Lisov, who was diagnosed with Perthes disease at the age of 9 and moved from Russia to Israel in 2019, beat Chile’s Brian Tapia 7:5, 6:1 in his Paralympic debut.
Lysov was ranked 17th earlier this month and advanced to the second round on Sunday against Britain’s Alfie Hewitt, the tournament’s top seed. Hewitt, a nine-time Grand Slam singles champion and three-time Roland Garros champion, easily defeated Liso 6-0, 6-1 in his third Paralympic appearance.
On Saturday, the winner of Roland Garros in foursomes and the number of the tournament. Third-seeded Guy Sasson reached the quarterfinals by defeating Chile’s Francisco Caulepa 6:2, 6:3 in the first round. Great Britain reached the semi-finals with a score of 6-1, 6-2.
