The American tennis phenomenon, Coco Gough,
became the flag bearer of the USA team. “When I called my mom,
I started crying,” Goff said on NBC’s “Today” show.
In the men’s soccer opener, the United States lost 3-0 to host France.
British Olympian Charlotte Dujardin has withdrawn from the Olympics
after a video emerged alleging horse abuse.

France defeats U.S. 3-0 in group stage opener
France defeated America 3-0 in the opening game of the group stage.
France remained goalless in the first half despite having most of the ball,
but took the lead in the second half.
Alexandre Lacazette gave the opposition the lead in the 61st minute
with a low shot, and Michael Olist followed up with an own goal just 8 minutes later.
Loic Badet scored another goal with a header in the 85th minute.
France played an attacking role for most of the 90 minutes,
recording more shots on goal and six more corners than their opponents.
Both countries were represented with their U23 teams.
This is the first time an American male athlete will compete in the
Olympics since the 2008 Beijing Games.
The United States plays New Zealand on Saturday.
Israel ties Mali 1-1
Although Israel equalized in the second half,
they must consider themselves a very lucky team to get a point.
Mali shot at several goals and corners – 8:2 and 9:1 and kept two thirds.
Group D play continues on Saturday,
with Israel taking on Paraguay at the Parc des
Princes and Mali taking on Japan in Bordeaux.
France takes 3-0 lead vs. U.S.
France extended their lead against the USA late in the second half,
and Loic Baudet’s header in the 85th minute gave France a 3-0 lead.
This goal was scored from a corner kick.
France scores twice in second half vs. U.S.
France scored first against the United States in their opening
group game before the hosts doubled their lead.
After dominating the first 45 minutes, France finally made
the breakthrough in the second minute. Alexandre Lacazette,
the captain of the French national team, took a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute
when American goalkeeper Patrick Schulte deflected a shot from
outside the penalty area into the far left corner of the goal.
In the 69th minute, Michel Allis, who ignored Lacazette’s
pass from the same spot, again beat the American
defender to the far left corner next to the goal.
